Unlike a standard flat backboard, this one has three 8 inch wings each angled at 45 degrees with one on the bottom and one on each side. These wings help keep the basketball from bouncing out of the swimming pool after a shot is made, instead the ball will ricochet back into the play area. Players do not have to constantly get out of the pool to chase the ball, interrupting their game. By containing the basketball in the play area, safety is greatly increased. When players have to constantly get out of the swimming pool to get the ball, there is a chance they may slip on the wet pool deck and be injured. Any potential damage by ricochet shots out of the pool to screens, windows, plants or furniture is virtually eliminated by the wings deflecting the ball back into the pool.
